The concept of smart cities has planted a new digital world with the help of billions of data analysis every second.

This bold initiative replicated both in urban and rural cities while through digitalization, the urban areas are converted into rural areas at a very high rate of advancement of solving problems.

Although the implementation of the smart city project in India had started long ago but due to the involvement of all stakeholders of the city and municipality always becomes a challenge in the development of the smart city.

But now the government has just started the ‘Smart City Mission 2.0’ to evaluate and elevate the process of the development of the Smart City Project.

The core infrastructure elements used to make smart city include:

  • Electricity Supply
  • Water Supply
  • Waste and Energy Management
  • Urban Mobility – Parking, transport, traffic management, etc.
  • E-Governance and Citizen Services – Video monitoring, Electronic Delivery, Public Engagement, etc.
  • Sustainable Environment
  • Safety and Security
  • Health and Education

The smart city functionality must include the Internet of Things with the data collection and communication protocol. The major concern for the development of Smart City is the data collection, analysis and transfer of all the different sectors include in this project.

For this information collection and aggregation, the ICT (Information and Communication Technologies) plays a crucial role to act as a platform.

ICT has enabled the functioning of the city in terms of resources, services, lifestyles, scalability, and flexibility to achieve the highest performance in handling the smart city.

Services that ICT provide in to enhance the quality of life, reducing the resource cost and on the top of that managing urban flow in real-time are –

  • Information and knowledge sharing: Information sharing with accuracy and precision led the city to respond to the problems and accelerates in taking action.
  • Integration: To ensure the city’s vulnerabilities, relevant timely information needs to be accessed like – Early Warning Systems.
  • Forecasts: Amount of data is used to identify trends, patterns, recognize risks and predict problems. This information improves the reaction time and reduces the damage caused by it.

As you understand this concept, it clearly states that ICT is the lifeline to the smart city project as a central nerve. Without it, the implementation of this project led to a big Question mark to you.

The modeling of a smart city is a wide concept that needed to make different pillars for different elements of smart cities.

ICT provides a platform to integrate these different pillars either in the form of human-to-human, human-to-machine, or machine-to-machine communication. To accomplish the desired tasks for the daily activities in the cities, the major requirements are:

  • Cost-Effectiveness: The expenditure on the hardware and software equipments and maintenance on massive scale needs to minimize the cost with high accuracy.
  • High Reliability and Long Time: The equipments can be used for over 20 years without its replacement and the communication technologies are designed with industrial-grade specification which makes it highly reliable.
  • Network Security: Security is always on concern when transferring of data is the primary implementation factor for the project.
  • Quality of Service (QoS): The quality of service criteria is used for the selection and evaluation of technologies.

When we talked about these requirements, the specific technologies are used, that is, the collection of the Internet of Things applications, cellular networks like GSM/GPRS/LTE/UMTS, Narrow-band IoT Networks and Low-Power Wireless Area Network (LPWANs) provides a feasible future with the help of these technologies used in smart cities.

So, we have talked a lot about the components, features, requirements of the smart city.

Now, we talked about the condition of Smart city implication in India – Indian government officials said that the central government second version smart city proposal will be initiated across the country.

The mission will be rated under five parameters, that is, planning, technology, governance, services and finance with its living sensitive action. The deadline for completion of this mission was set between 2019 to 2023.
